Giving thanks for NIRSA accomplishments

The calendar year-end is quickly upon us, as is the half-way point of the traditional academic year. The recently (or about to be) concluded fall semester has proven to be a very successful one in terms of the business of our NIRSA. The hard work of hundreds of volunteer leaders on committees, work teams and boards, as well as the dedication of our staff at the NIRSA National Center has helped to move NIRSA forward in our mission and services to all Members.

While I do not mean to minimize all of the service Members provide to our Association, I would like to pause and highlight some major accomplishments from the fall of 2005:

First, knowing how important a budget is to any operation, the full effect of the Financial Responsibility Initiative (2002) has been realized, as the NIRSA Board of Directors approved the balanced FY06 operating budget that fully funded depreciation of our National Center. While the books are not yet closed on FY05 (NIRSA's budget operates on a calendar year basis), projections indicate a very healthy and successful financial year again.

Second, under the leadership of our NIRSA Services Corporation Board of Directors, NIRSA successfully came together across the country to participate in the pilot program to distribute a national magazine in our facilities. We will be feeling and seeing the success of that process for years to come.

Third, significant feedback has been received from Members regarding the recreational sports Standards that are currently being reviewed by the Standards Committee. Sessions were held at regional and state workshops, and Members directly contacted committee members. An additional opportunity for review and feedback will be available at the Annual Conference with a town hall session scheduled for Standards.

Fourth, having received feedback from Members by survey, the Registry Work Team has recommended moving forward in the development of this new program. The NIRSA Board of Directors has recently authorized hiring a consultant who will be charged with developing an implementation plan.

Finally, thank you to all the hosts and program committees of the regional and state workshops. All five regions and the five state associations in Region III conducted successful events. Combined with other state workshops, approximately 2,000 Members attended the educational and professional development opportunities. Let's also add in the National Recreation Facilities Institute, the Aquatic Institute and the Soccer Sport Club Championships, combined with numerous regional and state flag football tournaments. And our Student Leadership Team set a goal of conducting a Lead On event in each region, with four conducted in the fall (the other two are in the winter). Your hard work and dedication is appreciated.

The upcoming holiday season and traditional semester break is a time to spend with family and friends to celebrate the many good fortunes that are a part of our lives. Our NIRSA family is no exception. We have so much to be thankful for, so much to celebrate and so much more that lies ahead! I wish to each and every Member an enjoyable holiday season, good health and spirit and a very happy new year!
