NIRSA Services Corporation (NSC) Board meets at NIRSA National Center
NSC Board President Mick Deluca, CRSS; Board Secretary Jeff Vessely, CRSS; and Board Members Tamra Garstka, CRSS; Kathleen Hatch, CRSS; Kevin Marbury, CRSS; and Eric Nickel, CRSS, discussed finances, strategic planning, sponsorship and operational issues November 3-4, 2005. The NSC, formed June 1, 1999, is a taxable subsidiary (C Corporation) of NIRSA. The NSC is a separate, but affiliated entity of NIRSA, and NIRSA is the sole shareholder of the NSC. The corporation was established as a risk management tool to preserve NIRSA's tax-exempt status. The NSC is governed by a seven-person Board of Directors, appointed annually by the NIRSA Board of Directors.
Highlights included:
- Overview of the NSC and its current organizational description. The discussion included the need to review the current NSC statement of purpose to see if changes in the language are warranted. The Board will continue to communicate NSC information clearly to the NIRSA Membership, and will have a presence at the 2006 Annual Conference. There was additional discussion to align the NSC with the NIRSA Foundation and NIRSA in a visual representation which would compare the mission of each organization.
- Review of FY 2005 Year-to-Date Financial report and FY Approved Budget. Agreement to revise the FY 2006 Budget which summarizes profits & losses by program including a labor allocation.
- Overview of Marketing/Sponsorship Model. Demonstration of how our marketing partner will interface with Membership, develop relationships, and provide education about the National Campus Championship Series (NCCS).
- Overview of The University Network (TUN), and discussion of field reports and what improvements will be made.
- Report on Extramural & Sport Club Championships Work Team. Discussion of the role of the NSC BOD as liaisons to Extramural and Sport Club Championship Committees. Discussion of the role of the NSC in selection of Committee Members.
- NIRSA Volleyball Championships
Discussion included:
- Requiring a security deposit from each team
- Increasing security line-item in budget to $10,000
- Requiring university staff supervision
- NIRSA would have a "security representative" to interface with local police and security
- Providing an alternative activity, but not multiple alternative activities
