NCCS2006 NIRSA Volleyball Championships behavioral guidelines restated

Security deposit no longer needed; liaison responsibilities explained

The NIRSA Services Corporation (NSC) Board of Directors met December 20, 2005 via teleconference to discuss recently adopted participant conduct requirements for the 2006 NIRSA Collegiate Volleyball Sport Club Championships scheduled for Salt Lake City, Utah, April 13–15.

In response to feedback from a variety of sources (NIRSA Members, volleyball club teams, volleyball commissioners, etc.), and after much reflection and discussion on the intent of the original guidelines to curb behavioral problems at the volleyball tournament, the NSC Board voted to amend the guidelines as follows:

  • The $200 security deposit per team has been suspended for the 2006 Tournament. The NSC Board expects to evaluate whether or not a security deposit is warranted for future events after the conclusion of the 2006 Tournament.
  • The definition of an ‘Official University-Appointed Team Liaison’ has been expanded to include members of the volleyball club team. Regardless of who is designated by a university, official team liaisons will be expected to uphold the Standards of Conduct and agree to several specific requirements and duties during the competition (see below).

It is the NSC Board's sole intent to conduct a safe, successful championship event in the spirit of NIRSA's values. The majority of the participants share these values. The NSC Board looks forward to working with NIRSA National Center staff, the Sport Club Championships Committee, Volleyball Commissioners, NIRSA schools and Members, club teams, and individual participants to ensure a successful event this year, and to evaluating required action steps for the future.

University-Appointed Team Liaisons:

  1. Must agree to be the Official University-Appointed Team Liaison for designated teams of a College or University that are participating in the Tournament, and enforce the Standards of Conduct with the individuals on that team(s).
  2. Must meet with campus team or teams entering the Tournament in advance of travel to review NIRSA Standards of Conduct, expectations of conduct and behavior, and potential ramifications if there are violations of the Standards of Conduct during the Championship event.
  3. Must attend the onsite pre-Tournament meeting. Failure to attend the meeting may lead to team(s) expulsion from the Tournament. Contact information (hotel and cell phone) and verification of Director’s approval of team liaison will be collected at the meeting. Additionally, must be available to meet during the Tournament should a Standards of Conduct violation or alleged violation occur.
  4. Must be reachable by Tournament staff via cell phone at all times.
  5. Must stay at the same hotel where your College or University team is lodging; in cases where multiple teams from a University are dispersed among more than one hotel, liaison must stay at the same hotel where at least one of the teams are lodging.
  6. Must agree to be the official contact for team(s) should a Standards of Conduct violation or alleged violation occur. Tournament staff will provide tournament venue and hotel security with cell phone numbers for team liaisons.
  7. Must immediately report violations of Standards of Conduct to the Tournament Director (or designee) and University staff.
