The 2006 NIRSA Collegiate Volleyball Sport Club Championships culminated on Saturday, April 15, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Six National Titles were bestowed on teams, two of whom were defending 2005 National Champions!
The Men’s Division I title went to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. They were never ranked lower than #2 all season, and they didn’t disappoint during the championships, as they were undefeated in match play, and lost only one game out of the 19 played.
The University of Texas at Austin women repeated as the Women’s Division I National Champion. They ranked near the top all season long and were a familiar sight on the awards stage.
Men’s Division I-AA crowned the University of Missouri-Columbia as the Champion. Dominican University repeated as the Men’s Division II Champion. The University of Arizona “B” (2004 and 2005 Men's DIII Champions) lost their title to Cal Poly “B”, and Michigan State University “B” won the Women’s DII National Championship.
Numerous NIRSA members and volleyball aficionados were on hand to help manage the enormous event. Increased security in the tournament hotels and the assistance from university staff in laying down their expectations made a significant behavioral difference, but there is still a long way to go. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success.
