The 2006 NIRSA Endorsed National Intramural Basketball Championships began with 52 teams, 42 volunteer staff, 30 officials, 23 student workers, and one host institution. However, in the afternoon of April 23, 2006, the NIBC finished with two teams with the right to call themselves National Champions. Columbus State University’s Runnin’ Cougars and Florida A&M University’s Strike won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. Columbus State, who entered the 2006 NIBC as the Georgia State Champion, breezed through pool play undefeated. After a hard-fought, semi-final game they easily beat Clemson University to win their first championship. Florida A&M earned their 2006 NIBC berth as the Florida Swamp Bowl Champion and also had little difficulties advancing out of their pool into the bracket. However, they moved through the playoff bracket very easily en route to their championship win over the University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to the two championship teams, the 2006 NIBC also provided for a plethora of other awards. The men’s team from Howard University won the Men’s Sportsmanship Award; the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s women’s team won the Women’s Sportsmanship Award. A big thanks to all the teams and officials for being a part of a wonderful weekend of basketball, as well as those around the country who have supported the National Campus Championship Series events by either hosting a regional event or sent officials and/or teams to the events. A special thank you to every volunteer staff member who came to Atlanta to make this year’s NIBC the best. Your efforts made the difference! Dan Hazlett, tournament director, acknowledged the support the event received from the NIRSA Executive Board, the NIRSA National Center, the NIRSA Services Corporation and the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation staff.
