Leadership Notes
Spread the word: step up and stand!
By Amy Jo Jenkins, University of Texas at Austin, National Student Representative
I hope all of you are having a fabulous fall semester and have attended or are preparing to attend NIRSA State Workshops, Lead Ons, and Regional Conferences. I highly encourage each of you to attend at least one NIRSA workshop or conference this fall. These are worthwhile opportunities to network with other students and professionals in the organization, and attend educational and professional development workshops and presentations. I was fortunate enough to attend the Region V Lead On (October 12-13) in Des Moines and the Region I Conference (October 19-21) in Baltimore. While there, I met some incredible people ... and students who would be great candidates for office!
There is no better time than the present to prepare for the future. As students, we have many opportunities for leadership positions within NIRSACampus Contacts, State Student Representatives, Regional Student Representatives and the National Student Representativenot to mention the numerous committees and Knowledge Communities always in search of a Student Member.
At NIRSA conferences, you’ll have the opportunity to talk with Regional Student Representatives, State Representatives and Campus Contacts to decide which position might be the best fit for you. As NSR or RSR, you will have the opportunity to be directly involved with NIRSA from the inside out. Opportunities include a summer retreat in Corvallis, exploration of the NIRSA National Center, interaction with Board Members, and providing input on NIRSA events. Brand new for 2007: the Association will cover the Annual Conference registration fees for all Regional Student Representatives! Candidates may self-nominate, and all materials must be submitted online by December 1.
On another note, the 2007 Annual Conference is just around the corner, April 18-21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. And for the first time, there is a $99 student hotel rate at the host hotel, the Hilton Minneapolis. There are a limited number of rooms at this rate and all occupants must be students to secure this rate. Check out the website for more information on the Annual Conference.
Over the next few weeks, I will be attending the Region IV Conference/Big 12 & Friends in Austin, Texas, and also the Region VI Lead On and Conference in San Diego, California. Please don’t hesitate to come on over and introduce yourself to me. Until then, enjoy the fall, and safe travels!
