Brian Carswell, a NIRSA Past President and respected colleague, has left the University of Arizona. A farewell reception was held for him on November 28, with many NIRSA Members in attendance.
Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Carswell received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the College of Charleston in 1981. He has lived in Tucson, Arizona since 1983, after receiving his Master of Science degree from the University of South Carolina in that year.
Carswell served as the Associate Director of Campus Recreation for Finance and Operations at the University of Arizona. He oversaw the administration of all recreational facilities at the university and handled the marketing and fund development for the department. His long career at the university involved many aspects, from intramurals to facilities, and touched the lives of hundreds of student employees and professionals.
Mirum Washington White, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation at the University of Arizona, has worked with Carswell for 16 years. "You cannot put into words what Brian Carswell has done for NIRSA, recreational sports, or Campus Recreation at the University of Arizona,” White said. “Every day was an opportunity to provide a ‘moment’ for someone or something. His dry wit, his corny jokes, and his homespun wisdom are all wrapped in the stature of a Renaissance man. We hope you join us in wishing him well in his next big adventure."
Carswell has a long history of NIRSA service, including terms as President and Region VI Vice President. He was also the NIRSA State Director for Arizona and Coordinator for the 1993 NIRSA Region VI Conference. He was involved in numerous committees and gave presentations at the state, regional and national levels.
