The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Pure Playaz men’s flag football team snagged two regional championships in the month of November and enter the NIRSA National Flag Football Championships as the top team. The inaugural NIRSA National Flag Football Championships take place January 4-7, 2007 and will be hosted by the University of Texas at Dallas.
Pure Playaz won the Ohio State regional on November 5, defeating the Wright State Wolfpack 22-19, and two weeks later won the University of Maryland regional by a score of 33-12 over Millersville University Bad Boys. The Pure Playaz are led by quarterback Michael Newton, Ohio State Regional Most Valuable Player, and slot receiver Josh Treadaway, University of Maryland Regional Most Valuable Player.
“Winning two NIRSA Regional Championships is extremely tough. Winning the first NIRSA National Championship will certainly prove to be even tougher,“ said Rick Wiley, Pure Playaz Team Captain and slot receiver. “Still, the guys have worked hard and look forward to the challenge. Hopefully, after months of practice and preparation, we're ready.”
The first-ever NIRSA National Flag Football Championships will feature a total of 64 teams: 36 in the men’s division, 16 in the women’s division, and 12 in the co-rec division. Many of the NIRSA Regional winners and runners-up will be on hand to stake their claim at a national championship. View a complete listing of all NIRSA Regional Flag Football Championship results.
