Leadership Notes
Thanks to all who stepped up to the plate
By Amy Jo Jenkins, University of Texas at Austin, National Student Representative
Welcome back! The holiday season seems like ages ago, but I hope everyone had some time to relax, enjoy family and friends, and maybe do a little reflecting on the past few months. At the beginning of each year our facilities are usually buzzing with people trying to re-commit to their New Year’s resolutions of staying in shape, eating healthier, and improving their lifestyle. I challenge you to get involved on another leveljoin a NIRSA committee, serve on your recreation advisory council, or serve as a Campus Contact.
Several students took the opportunity to “Step Up and Stand” for positions on the Student Leadership Team. I would personally like to thank each and every one of you for having the courage and initiative to stand for office. I know that any of the slated student candidates will do an exceptional job on the Student Leadership Team. These candidates will speak at the Student Business Meeting at the Annual Conference in Minneapolis, and you can find out more information on the student website.
Several of the current and future SLT members will be attending the Emerging Recreational Sports Leaders (ERSL) Conference in New Orleans February 9-10. You still have a few days to register! ERSL is designed to develop and encourage conference participants to consider wellness, health, and recreation as a possible career. It will prepare you as student leaders to take on the task of guiding others to live, work, and play in a multicultural society. The NIRSA veterans will reconnect with old friends and colleagues, and those new to NIRSA will get to meet the family! I highly encourage you to attend this conference to interact with new members and share your knowledge with others.
I also hope to see many of you in Minneapolis for the Annual Conference April 18-21. Remember, there are still student rooms available on certain nights at the host hotel for only $99 a night, so make your reservation today! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can help you with anything at all.
Keep up the great work!
Amy Jo
