NCCSNew NCCS Championships appeals process

An overview of the new appeals process that applies to all NCCS events

The NIRSA National Service Corporation (NSC) has developed a new appeals process for all National Campus Championship Series (NCCS) events. This process, including the establishment of an NCCS Appeals Board, is to ensure due process for individual competitors and institutions participating.

The NIRSA Director of National Sport Programs, at Sport Club Championship events, or the Extramural Tournament Director, at each Extramural event, is designated to enforce the rules and regulations for the NCCS Championship programs.

Appeals process

The following steps should be taken to appeal a sanction by either the NIRSA Director of National Sport Programs or the Extramural Tournament Director:

  • An individual or team can appeal the sanction with a written letter approved by their Campus Recreation Director and sent to the NIRSA Director of National Sport Programs. The reasons for the appeal should be clearly outlined. The NIRSA Director of National Sport Programs forwards the appeal to either the Chair of the NSC Sport Club Championship Committee or the Chair of the NSC Extramural Committee, depending on the sport, for review by the respective committee. If the appeal is granted, the individual or team will be re-instated or the sanction lifted. Or, the appeal may be denied.
  • If a player or team desires an additional review (beyond the respective NSC Committee) by the NCCS Appeals Board:
    • The Campus Recreation Director (or appropriate school representative) must request this appeal through written notification. This should be sent to the NIRSA National Director of Sport Programs, include any circumstances related to the situation that caused the violation, and must be submitted within 15 business days of the date of the original decision. The NIRSA Director of National Sport Programs forwards the appeal to the Chair of the NCCS Appeals Board.
    • The NCCS Appeals Board will rule on the appeal after investigating the situation and may uphold, reject, or modify the action taken by the NIRSA Director of National Sport Programs or Extramural Tournament Director and/or the respective NSC Committees (Sport Club Championship or Extramural Committee).
      • The written appeal can be reviewed and voted on via email.
      • The chair of the NCCS Appeals Board can elect to hold a conference call and invite any of the following: Director of National Sport Programs, Chair of the respective Championships committee, Director of Recreational Sports from the appealing institution (or designated representative), the team representative of the appealing team, legal counsel.
    • Decisions made by the NCCS Appeals Board are final. Under no circumstances can a decision by the NCCS Appeals Board result in the replay of any completed competition.
