2007 National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day a success
See how schools across the country celebrated
Thanks to the 25+ institutions that celebrated 2007 National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day on February 22. February 22, 1950, is NIRSA's founding date, and in 1999, members voted to proclaim this a day for nationwide focus on the positive benefits of recreational sports, fitness and wellness.
Many colleges and universities sent NIRSA descriptions and photos of their activities, chronicling their day (or week) of celebration. View all photos here. If you forgot to send in your photos, it’s not too late. Just email them to Mary Callender and they will be added to the website.
A special welcome goes to California State University, Fullerton and the College of Southern Maryland, Leonardtown Campus, who noted that this was the first year they formally recognized National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day.
Some of the celebratory events included:
- Polar Bear 5K
- NIRSA birthday cake
- Climbing Wall Twister
- RecSports Recess (4 square, hopscotch, tetherball, tug-o-war and more)
- Drop-in dodge ball
- Community service program, gathering non-perishable food items in exchange for a T-shirt
- Discover Scuba
- Rec Cocktail Lounge - free smoothies handed out all evening long
- Speed sudoku puzzle contests
- Blood pressure and body composition screenings
NIRSA National Center staff got into the action this year by taking a NIRSA banner on a brisk 20-minute walk around the neighborhood. The activity proved so popular that these “All-Team” walks now take place monthly.
Start planning now for next year’s celebration. The February 22 date never changes!
