The USTA Pacific Northwest is excited to announce the continuation of the USTA Pacific Northwest Tennis on Campus X-tramural Team Tennis Championship.
In November 2006, USTA Pacific Northwest held the first ever X-tramural Championship at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington and now plans to expand the event. The University of Oregon, the University of Washington and the University of Puget Sound all fielded teams. The intramural team from the U of O went undefeated in the event and took first prize.
“We got a good number of matches at UPS,” said U of O team captain Kevin Bailey. “Winning wasn’t really the best part. The best part was the experience of going and meeting new people.”
To qualify for the event, teams must compete in the intramural tennis program at their school. Teams compete using the World Team Tennis format, in which a match consists of one set of men’s and women’s singles, one set of men’s and women’s doubles, and one set of mixed doubles. The format gives players a chance to cheer for their friends and compete against intramural teams from other schools.
Cindie Edamura, University of Oregon Assistant Director of Recreational Sports, spearheaded the U of O team tennis program in 2006.
“They had a great time and overall it was a positive experience for them and for our program,” Edamura said. “We are thrilled with how it turned out and hope to participate again. I hope other schools decide to participate next year.”
