The day before the tournament, inclement weather forced 44 teams to alter their travel routes. However, tournament staff scrambled to accommodate the teams’ misfortunes and adjusted the schedule so that all teams could make their first-round matches. By the end of the first playing day, a record 240 teams were competing on 30 courts in the largest NIRSA Volleyball Championships in its 23-year history.
In a spectacular finals match held at the Broadbent Arena in front of 2,500 fans, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won their second consecutive championship in Men’s Division I by defeating Lakeland College 25-16, 23-25, 19-17. The University of Texas at Austin women’s team won their third straight division I championship over Marquette University 25-18, 25-16. In recognition of this achievement, The University of Texas at Austin lights it Main Building Tower on May 2 in honor of the women’s team.
