Pamela Wetherbee-Metcalf of Loyola College in Maryland hosted a Summit for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on August 6. Following last year’s successful inaugural event at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the Summit Committee invited recreational sports professionals and students from HBCUs in all of Region I, plus Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, to network with other recreational sports professionals. It also gave nonmember attendees a chance to meet and ask questions of NIRSA leaders about how the Association can be of service.
Representatives from eight HBCUs attended, including those from Bowie State University, Cheyney University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Hampton University, Howard University, Norfolk State University, and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.
Representatives from several area NIRSA Member Institutions, including American University, George Washington University, Millersville University, Towson University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the University of Maryland, College Park, joined those from Loyola.
NIRSA representatives included Region I Vice President Kurt Klier, NIRSA Historian Paul Wilson, Past Presidents’ Representative J. Michael Dunn, Regional Student Representatives Anne MacDonald and Sarah Shouvlin, and Executive Director Kent J. Blumenthal.
