Spread the word: National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day is February 22
No matter how you choose to honor it, don't let February 22 go by without sharing our NIRSA philosophy with the larger community
Why February 22?
In April 1999, NIRSA Members passed a resolution to encourage an annual national celebration of its founding date, February 22, 1950. This celebration promotes the tremendous benefits of participation in recreational sports, and honors the representatives of 11 Historically Black Colleges/Universities who first met at Dillard University in New Orleans to form the National Intramural Association, NIRSA's predecessor.
Join NIRSA Members February 22 in calling national attention to the many positive benefits that people of all ages enjoy when they participate in recreational sports, fitness activities and wellness programs.
Here are just a few ways that schools celebrated last year:

Cal State Fullerton held their first ever National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day Celebration called "RecSports Recess," which encouraged participants to "play like a kid again."
|
The University of Oregon awarded Mardi Gras beads to participants of "Mile High Club" activities:
- Completed one mile on the indoor track (run/walk)
- Climbed high on the designated rock wall route
- Sunk a putt shot with a golf club

The University of Connecticut offered a Rec Cocktail Lounge, where they handed out free smoothies all evening long.
|
Belmont University offered Climbing Wall Twister! |
Take a minute to fill out the National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day "Count Me In" Form on the NIRSA website. After your celebration, send photos and descriptions, and we'll post them on the website as highlights for others to view. It's a great way to get new ideas!
