Another highly successful championship event in Dallas
The nation's best flag football teams locked horns at the 2nd annual NIRSA National Flag Football Championships hosted by The University of Texas at Dallas January 3-5. A total of 60 teams from 18 states competed for national titles in the biggest annual collegiate national flag football championships in the United States. The University of North Carolina Charlotte -- Pure Playaz' (men's), Florida A&M University -- Simply Marvelous (women's), and the University of North Carolina Charlotte -- Charlottes Finest (co-rec) collared national titles in this National Campus Championship Series event.
Between games, players participated in a skills challenge titled the "5th Quarter" that featured punt and pass stations, as well as a 40-yard sprint. Prizes like duffle bags, wind-suits, gift cards, and Powerade items were awarded to the winners in their respective division.
Windy and cold weather swept through UTD on Thursday and Friday as many scrambled to find gloves, but within 36 hours, sunscreen was in demand as beautiful 73-degree weather turned out for the Saturday games. Tournament action was played on 11 fields and a dedicated pool of students and professionals supported Tournament Director and UTD Recreation Director Tricia Losavio. The tournament staff included 47 student officials representing 25 institutions, 42 tournament staff representing 24 institutions, and 4 NIRSA representatives, including NCCS Committee Chair Dan Hazlett.
"The NCCS Committee wishes to once again thank Tricia Losavio, the UTD staff, and the numerous dedicated NIRSA Student and Professional Members who traveled to Dallas for a phenomenal NIRSA National Flag Football Championships," Hazlett said. "The success of our second National Flag Football Championships is a direct result of a collaborative effort among all flag football sites, our membership, the NIRSA National Center, the NIRSA Services Corporation, and the NCCS Committee. With the addition of our new title sponsor, Powerade, I see even greater things in store for the NIRSA National Campus Championship Series."
