Dateline: Austin, Texas

Tom Kirch

In just a few days, more than 2,300 NIRSA Members and others will be gathering in Austin, Texas – Live Music Capital of the World – for NIRSA's Annual Conference & Recreational Sports Exposition. This will be a wonderful opportunity to join together with professionals, students, and associates within the recreational sports field for four days of education and networking possibilities. I always look forward with excitement and anticipation when attending NIRSA events because of the opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues, learn and create together, and to recharge myself with new energy and enthusiasm.

Special thanks to our Host Committee, chaired by Eric Stoutner from The University of Texas at Austin for providing an outstanding and unique venue! Music will be the theme this year and you will encounter it almost everywhere you go. A second special thank you goes to the Conference Program Committee, chaired by Past President Maureen McGonagle and Co-Chairs Jenn Speer and Dave DeAngelo, for putting together a meaningful conference program with new features and a great comprehensive mix of sessions!

I have shared this past year at a variety of NIRSA events, meetings, and other settings that when NIRSA Members assemble, magic happens. Relationships are formed and nurtured, knowledge is shared and created, the joy and privilege of our work is demonstrated, we mentor and role-model our future leaders, we consult and problem-solve, and we encourage and reinforce. These gatherings become special because of the human interaction, the common focus of our work, and the recognition of the impact we have on the lives of others. It is important to stop and step back from our day-to-day responsibilities, to reconsider the broader context of the role in higher education, recreational sports, and the success of students – a joyous experience that has meaning and purpose for us all.

The Annual Conference is also a time to celebrate our successes, to continue our path towards change, and to forge new initiatives for the future. We have much to be proud of (see the State of the Association address) - an organization that has taken its rightful place at the table of higher education associations, and that will lead the work with student success through meaningful and measurable outcomes.

I challenge you to make this an enriching learning and teaching opportunity. If you are traveling to Austin, be productive and intentional with your time and efforts. And make a point to share what you have learned with those that cannot attend this year. Become a conduit or even a catalyst for knowledge in your own organization and contribute to a learning community for all. If you are unable to be in Austin, seek out those that represent you so they can share their experiences. For those colleagues who are unable to join us, we will miss you. Thank you for making it possible for others to attend as your sacrifice enables your co-workers to make the trip to Austin.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Austin for exchange, renewal, and friendship.

Safe travels, take care, and be well,

TK
